in ‘be here now’ (a hippie-era book that everybody ought to look over at some point, since it’s an awfully easy read and makes a pretty good primer on eastern religion), ram dass says there are two kinds of guru: the sat guru is the spiritual master you go see on some mountaintop because he’s this highly evolved dude; the upa guru is, potentially, anybody you meet, even, or perhaps especially, a complete asshole. what counts is what you can learn from dealing with them. like a certain conservative i used to work with (i think he’s moved on somewhere or other) who taught me that logic is not enough and some people are so resistant to reason that they need to be killed. wait, maybe i learned the wrong lesson…
