Piercing the Spectacle
piercing the spectacle: a situationist critique of computer games. via wiley

This is a damgood critique of video games, of their essential blandness. A quote from article:

“Likewise, for thirty years, a key premise of the educational game industry has been that the magic of gaming could serve as a hook for engagement. Why, when we are willing to learn so much detailed stuff to play a computer game, can’t we simply design games in which that detailed stuff has some educational value? Why for thirty years have we failed at this? One reasons comes immediately to mind: educational software is built upon a representation of education. Give me a game with mathematical concepts as its content and I’ll show you a game that reminds me of sitting in a classroom, learning and doing things with no demonstrable personal relevance. Educational games typically fail to populate the dimension of action with choices that are personally relevant, creative, or powerful. That’s because contemporary education fails in exactly the same way.”

I quote this because the best educational software I have, other than encyclopedias on disk, is probably the cakewalk music software I have been using all these years. In the staff view you can see the notes bounce along as the software plays back the MIDI music file you’ve been working on. Just by osmosis, I have picked up the rudiments of music theory from staring at that staff and moving notes where I wanted them, programming drum patterns, changin time signatures, and so on.

And if I do it well enough, I have a piece of music that I can take out into the real world. All the best games end up in the real world.

Hi,
The popular clip art collections (such as Clip art&more 3.5 Million) sold on Amazon prohibit use of their images in computer software. I am developing an educational software that will use lots of images. Is there a cost-effective way to acquire the images that I need? Thanks.

Do not enough cash to buy a car? Worry not, because that is available to take the loans to work out such kind of problems. Hence take a student loan to buy everything you need.
