star explosion
If the explosion had been within just 10 light-years, earth could have suffered a mass extinction... ever get the feeling we puny humans are awfully delicate?

What I love is that the scientists are so at a loss to explain what sort of ‘structural change’ would make a neutron magnetar release “about 10,000 trillion trillion trillion watts…a once-in-a-lifetime event. We have observed an object only 20km across, on the other side of our galaxy, releasing more energy in a 10th of a second than the Sun emits in 100,000 years,” said Dr Fender. “

snip
and note the vague language:
“It has this super-strong magnetic field and this produces some kind of structure which has undergone a rearrangement - it’s an event that is sometimes characterised as a ‘star-quake’, a neutron star equivalent of an earthquake,” explained Dr Fender.

“It’s the only possible way we can think of releasing so much energy.”

So we know what they’re talking about the last month or two in the bars of Princeton and Stanford: every astrophysics undergrad would like to be the one who figures out what that “some kind of structure” is.

And a tip o’ the hat to jaime for staying on top of the deep-space beat, and a lot more.

this actually made me feel sorry for the seti people. i know it’s an odd angle but even though we were not quite close enough to get rudely extinguished a whole lot of places were, and if anyone/thing was out there in that range, well… (pouring out a bottle of mad dog 20/20 for my dead alien homies)
