that’s one thing i loved about ‘spirited away’: the movie was full of really, really weird beings, who soon turned out to be, as the saying goes, just folks.

also, the entries on abumiguchi and tsukumogami remind me of the himalayan tulpa, the mind-created creature. see, i read an anecdote somewhere about a mountaineer in the himalaya whose hat blew off, and for quite some time the restless winds of the high valleys blew it about. the sherpas believed that it had become alive.

which in turn reminds me: have you ever seen how the wind can start one of those plastic soft drink/coffee lids rolling down the street at amazing speeds? well, out west, they have cattle watering troughs, like round wading pools made of galvanized steel or fiberglass, like this:

years ago, i read about one such trough, on a very windy day in one of those flat, treeless farming states, that got rolling and was seen for at least ten or twenty miles barreling across the countryside like a steel tumbleweed. nobody knew where it started or where it ended up.
