the grandad of brazilian smut

all of the following tidbits on historical brazillian smut are adapted from the chapbook carlos zefiro in black and white put out by the canadian plug in gallery in 1996 which i picked up that same year while working at a bookstore. quote: carlos zefiro was the pseudonym for a secretive amateur draughtsman and bank employee credited with producing and distributing the first latin american visual novellas - the cheaply produced pocket-sized chapbooks that informed several generations of brazilians about the ways of romance and unbridled sex. i guess that job at the bookstore was useful afterall !!

he did have a very effective, no-frills graphic style. he doesn’t let your eye wander off the subjects; his pictures don’t often contain even one object that is not either flesh or clothing. one is left to follow the lines about the composition, when most of these lines are naked flesh. that would be a problem if his draftsmanship were bad, but it’s accurate enough to be unobtrusive.

i like the mystery angle. for purely practical reasons he led a pynchonesque life, an invisible artist.

What a great artist he was, providing sex education to a whole generation of guys and gals.
