a case study in the illusions of blogging

yesterday i did some minor maintenance on my technorati account. i logged in to change a couple of tags around to better fit the site’s content as it has shaped up in the last year. we do evolve after all. while there i couldn’t resist the urge to click each tag and see where i stood in the technoratic scheme of things. the results were kind of funny and got me thinking, yet again, about the realities of blogging as compared to the number-driven illusions and mutually reinforcing delusions. consider the following a sort of case study in the illusions of blogging.

It’s funny. If you are a popular blog (high rank on Technorati) you can chose a tag - any tag - and get a high rank under that particular tag. If you chose to tag The Nonist “PCL” you would all of sudden become the most popular PCL blog. Much popular than PCL linkDump in fact.
And you would also become the most popular blog tagged “Erotic”...

Think about that.

why do we blog?

I heard there’d be free doughnuts and coffee.

how will we know when we’ve succeeded?

When a Krispy Kreme and a grande mocha (non-fat, no-whip) materialize on my computer desk, of course!

But seriously, I’ve stated my displeasure with Technorati’s rankings on a number of occasions. Since it’s the only tool of it’s kind out there (that I know of), it’s difficult to gauge how accurate it is, but I’d say it’s fairly clear that the tags are crap.

Technorati is crap. Period.

I have never liked all these cool blogosphere gadgets, ratings, awards and stuff - because they all only tell me that I am in the middle of nothing.

The usual superblogs will stay super, because the have such a huge linklist new stuff can hardly catch up.

But none of these tools reflect good content AND the relationship to a certain topic.

Statistics will never reflect the work of your many great essays and thoughts you share here.

Here in Barcelona, there’s now an exhibition of Diane Arbus’ photographs, so I’ve been reading a lot about her lately. In one of the articles I found this quote: “I really think that there are things that nobody can see unless I photograph them”.

Maybe it seems a little pretentious, but I think that’s also the reason I blog. I want to connect people to the things I believed in. Sometimes it’s an idea of my own, sometimes a book, sometimes a link to a place where I’ve found a valuable point of view, like this, or Orange Blog. I want my blog to be some kind of door. I’m not sure if I am explaining myself properly…

I found it was very fun that you consider your blog as an isolated islans. It makes me wonder, what am I then? Have you ever been in Spain? This is parallel reality… I wonder too if there’s anyone else in my city who have linked to you? Is it possible to see it in technorati?

Well, the last thing I want to tell you is that I am really a reader. Now you can be sure about one of those 895 sites (my god! 895 sites, I can’t even count without using my fingers!)

Cheers!

P.S. I think it’s much fair that you have that good rank in humanism.

very good point about arbus, danae.

i hafta laugh about the number one ranking in lies. at least they’re really funny lies! not like the unfunny lies one finds on some sites. too bad they don’t have a ranking for ‘pithy philosophical quotations.’ jaime has a trove.

the epilogue:

the very next morning, after posting this, i went to technorati to find that in a single day the nonist had somehow dropped 1,200 spots in the overall rankings. haha! yes that’s right in the space of one evening over 700 links pointing to us simply disappeared. over 300 sites suddenly no longer had links pointing to the nonist. interesting ay? guess you gotta be careful what you wish for.

i can’t understand the Technorati reasoning and usage..i tried, but can seems to find the appropriate way to be led by it. i guess i’m an old net-cat, i am surfing by intuitive touch, by my interests, as well as coincidence, as well as re-sharpening my search-thinking tools…
