i’m sure that i’ve mentioned my dislike for advertising before. i must have explained at some point how television ads rarely fail to illicit a sneer in my living room, often times accompanied by an expletive or two as well. no matter how “clever” an ad is i simply can not get past the fact it’s an ad; a cloying, disingenuous, attempt to convince me of something. and therein lies the problem, they never do, ever, and so in their ineffectiveness each one feels like an insult to my intelligence. today i’d like to single out a specific facet of advertising for discussion- the tagline


its amusing to me that boniva made your list.that happens to be the one that i despise the most.i even hate the voice that repeats the word boniva during the commercial.(it is ann curry of ch.7 news) the reason for my disdain is that her voice compels me to say the word bo-ni-va back at the t.v. in an exagerated tone.maybe the ad is successful if it makes me utter the name ,if only in disgust. p.s. i do not know what the drug is purported to to,but i would never take it !!

you don’t know what the drug is purported to do; you’ll never take it. wtf? i hate most adverts, and i’m ethically opposed to pharma adverts, but that’s a ridiculous reaction.

ambien’s a sleep aid. it’ll knock you clear out. it’s highly “habit forminkg.” it shouldn’t be advertised on tv, let alone targeted to insomniacs. to obfuscate the fact that there are side-effects, the commercial never states the purpose of the drug. be informed.

eh, my bad. boniva is a gsk drug that’s supposed to combat osteoporosis. it’s a monthly treatment, compared to the daily or weekly alternatives. to continue my crank-fest, you seriously might want to take a look at this.

I don’t know most products or services you talk about - but most companies here in Germany still use their english slogans around here. Even german ones do. Now that is really stupid, when you have a german ad for a german product in german - and the final slogan / tagline is in english ...

You missed my favorite, A Diamond Is Forever’s “I Forever Do” campaign. It’s worse than just meaningless—it’s a purposeful mangling of grammar. So offensive.
