Taking the turtle for a walk and letting him set the pace.

It happens all the time. My own ignorance is revealed to me in the same way. In the course of reading I accidentally discover that for some vague feeling or embryonic notion, which I’ve never taken the time to organize in my mind, or scrutinize, there is already a word. And where there is a word there are bound to be others. When the trouble is taken to name something it’s a safe bet there is a lineage of thought trailing behind it into history.

Made a pit-stop yesterday, on my way home from the grind, at the Strand bookstore. Picked up many goodies as always. Among the haul was a little book which I thought was pretty nifty and wanted to share straight away. As you can see from the cover reproduced above It’s called Objects. It’s a thin volume, put out in 1969, featuring some of the statues, banks, and other objects created by illustrator Walter Einsel. A google search on Einsel revealed little except for the fact he passed away not too long ago, is survived by his illustrator wife Naiad, and that, evidently, I’ve posted his work here before. In any case see below for a sampling of Einsel’s groovy moving sculptures.

On the unspoken value of Art

as revealed in Richard Pryor’s film Bustin’ Loose

A few weeks ago while sleepily watching a late night broadcast of Richard Pryor’s less-than-brilliant 1981 flick Bustin’ Loose I was surprised to be presented with a truth about Art. It struck me that Art is of tremendous, nay immeasurable, value to our society for a totally unintuitive reason.

Persecuting the majority?

You’ve heard, I’m sure, about the horrible persecution and hideous intollerance gripping this fine nation? Indeed. It’s everywhere. In our courts. In our boardrooms and bedrooms. In our malls. In our highest offices of government. On our streets. You need only look out your window to see it. I’m talking obviously about the “Criminilization of Christianity.”

Notes from on the ground

or: the what and why.

So after a redesign period of over a month I’m back. And what do I have to show for it? Well, you’re soaking in it. This is it. This is the new face of the Nonist. I can imagine what might be going through some of your minds on first sight- “No header image? No giant logo? No sidebar? No blogroll? No nav-bar? One column? What the hell?!” The design savvy among you might add “No image replacement? No ‘holy grail?’ No liquid or elastic? No yellow fade effects?” Some of you might even take this train of thought further down the line and arrive at- “It took a month to design this?”

Believe me when I tell you, I’m as surprised as anyone at where the redesign ultimately landed. If you’ll indulge me I’d like to talk a little about the process which got me here, explain the reasoning behind my decisions, and lay out a few of the changes…

And so that, as they say, is that. This is the new Nonist, an attempt at elegance in form and readability in function. As stated I’m not yet certain whether I’ve succeeded in these attempts, but for better or worse it’s done. We hear over and over that content is king. This new site is set up such that it will sink or swim on its content alone. Its a self-imposed challenge for me to craft some fine quality goodies because if I don’t there won’t be much else to look at.

I’m sure there will be hiccups and necessary tweaks (as such I encourage you all to let me know if you encounter problems). There are also a couple sections I’m still planning on launching (a gallery, a forum, a store, etc) but truth be told I’m sick of looking at code. So we’ll just take it all as it comes. Now all that remains is to see if I can remember how to blog. Here’s hoping.
