live and let die, please

the story: humans could live for hundreds of years as scientists develop treatments to “cure” old age like any other disease… oh boy. now i know that this is just one in the unending plethora of scientific nose picking that makes it into the news for no good reason, no great breakthrough as of yet, just some tinkering and some ideas… but crap!

i have mixed feelings about the possibility. one half of me says, hurry the fuck up scientists! need an intern or someone to get you coffee? need some mice to inject, i’ll run over to the pet store, no problem. need a vein to poke? c’mon. i’m getting old here! i would hate to think that 2 years after my death they will perfect some anti-aging treatment that lets every other asshole live to be 300. what a gip!

the other half suspects its just a terrible idea. do we really want to live for hundreds of years? what would happen? how could we possibly deal with a life that long? does anyone realize how many sundays that would add up to? how many elections seasons you’d have to live through? how many superbowl half-time shows and celebrity murder trials? how many times you’d have to mow your lawn? how many times you’d have the flu? how many divorces you’d have? imagine paying alimony for 200 years. what would happen to population numbers? crap. more people around at any given time? just what we need. how could people who can’t manage to fill an 80 year life with meaning, who need every manner of pharmaceutical just to get through a day without sucking a tail pipe or shaking a newborn to death, make it through 300 years of ennui?  would a 2 or 3 hundred year life even be bearable? at all? i mean who wants to work a shitty job for 200 years? christ…

anyhow, in summation, 900 year life: good for space travel and finishing that novel, bad for just about everything else?

here is a much more thorough look into the science and thought behind current anti-aging research if your interested.
